Spa Etiquette

A visit to a spa should be a relaxing, invigorating experience. If you are unaware of spa etiquette, however, the experience can be anything but pleasurable. Below are some brief suggestions, for you to obtain maximum satisfaction from your spa experience.

Spa Etiquette

Booking Appointments and Cancellations – Book as far in advance as possible as treatments and therapists are booked by the resort as and when they are needed. Give as much notice for cancellations as this may affect the chances of receiving any refunds. Always check the spa’s cancellation policy.

Punctuality – Always arrive on time or early, as treatment times are usually pre-booked and lateness may shorten the duration of your treatment.

Communicate Your Preferences – State the aspects of the treatment that you would like in accordance with your taste. These can be things such as, the sex of the therapist, kind (or absence) of music, room temperature, and even if you would like conversation or silence during the treatment. You should also communicate with the therapist during the treatment if there is anything you would like altered, should the experience become less palatable.

Medical Conditions – Inform the spa of any medical conditions you may have when booking your appointment as certain treatments may not be recommended.

Exploring the Facility – On arrival at the spa, be sure to ask for a tour before your
treatment. This will familiarise you with your surroundings as well as making you aware of other facilities that may be of interest.

Attire and Valuables – Casual clothing that can be easily removed and stored in lockers is recommended. It is best to ask when booking as some treatments are best received in the nude. It is best not to take jewellery or any other valuables with you but if you do so the spa will normally provide lockers or a safe deposit box to store such items.

Using Shared Facilities – Before using any pools it is always courteous to shower before entering. You should also wear any clothing provided by the spa before using certain facilities such as the sauna and steam rooms.

Socialising and Conversation – Always remember to be respectful of other guests and keep conversation at a low volume.

Cell Phones – A spa environment is supposed to be a tranquil, stress free environment. With this in mind leave cell phones behind or switch them off before treatment.

Smoking – Smoking is not usually permitted at spas. If it is, it is usually confined to designated areas.

Children – Many spas have age restrictions and children are generally not allowed so that the environment remains as relaxing as possible.

Eating and Drinking – Try not to eat at least an hour before treatment. Avoid the consumption of alcohol and drink plenty of water before and after, especially if receiving heat therapies.
